Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Asake has broken Omah Lay’s two-year record on Spotify with his latest single, “Active,” featuring American rapper Travis Scott.
This achievement marks a significant step in building momentum for Asake‘s upcoming sophomore album, Lungu Boy.
The artist, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, recently announced that Lungu Boy will include collaborations with prominent artists such as Wizkid and Stormzy. Asake surprised fans by dropping “Active” on August 7, 2024, just before the album’s release, along with its official music video.
In a remarkable display of success, “Active,” produced by renowned Nigerian producer DJ Sarz, became the biggest debut for an Afrobeats song in Spotify history, amassing 1.56 million streams on its first day and securing the #108 spot on the global Spotify chart. This achievement dethroned Omah Lay and Justin Bieber’s “Attention,” which previously held the record with 1.53 million streams on its debut day in 2022. Asake’s record-breaking feat came on August 7, 2024, ending Omah Lay’s two-year reign.
