Spain secured a spot in the women’s quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a 1-0 victory against Nigeria, thanks to a late free-kick from Alexia Putellas.
The match, held just five minutes before the final whistle, saw Spain struggle to break through Nigeria’s defense, with striker Salma Paralluelo having a second-half goal disallowed.
Despite several near misses, including a shot from Putellas that was cleared off the line, the game appeared destined to end in a draw. However, a careless foul by Nigeria led to a free-kick, which Putellas expertly lifted over the goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, to clinch the win.
With this victory, Spain tops Group C with six points from two matches and has already qualified for the knockout stage, preparing to face Brazil in their final group game. Conversely, Nigeria remains without points and must defeat Japan in their next match to have any hope of advancing.
Spain began their Olympic campaign with a 2-1 win against Japan, while Nigeria lost their opener 1-0 to Brazil, conceding a goal in the 37th minute. The tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups, with the top two from each group and the two best third-placed teams advancing to the quarter-finals.
As the second day of the Olympic Games unfolds, both teams are preparing for their final group matches, with Spain looking to solidify their position and Nigeria fighting for survival.
