John Cena, the legendary 16-time WWE champion, has announced his retirement from professional wrestling after the 2025 season. In an emotional speech delivered to a disappointed crowd at the WWE Money in the Bank event in Toronto, Cena expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to perform in the arena that had been his home for over two decades.
Cena, who burst onto the scene in the early 2000s as the fan-favorite “Doctor of Thuganomics,” has portrayed numerous popular characters both in the ring and on the silver screen. He has transitioned into a successful acting career, starring in films such as Blockers, The Suicide Squad, and the Fast & Furious franchise.
The 47-year-old wrestler-turned-actor revealed that he feels physically at his limit, but emphasized his intention to maintain ties with the wrestling industry that kickstarted his journey. Cena’s farewell tour, scheduled to include significant events like the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania 41, will feature around 30 to 40 performances throughout 2025.
Despite his reduced involvement in recent years, Cena remains a pivotal figure in WWE history, having clinched the WWE championship a record-breaking 16 times and headlining WrestleMania on five occasions. His retirement announcement, a collaborative effort with WWE, signifies the end of a remarkable chapter in his storied career.
