Euro 2024: Lamine Yamal Named Young Player of the Year After Spain Defeats England 2-1 in Final

Spain‘s forward Lamine Yamal received the Young Player of the Year award following Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

The Barcelona winger stood out with four assists, the most in the tournament, and scored a crucial goal against France in the semifinals, making him the youngest player to score in a major men’s semifinal. “This is the best birthday present I could have; it’s a dream,” Yamal said after winning his first European Championship at 17 years and one day old.

Yamal made history as the youngest player to play in the final of a men’s World Cup, European Championship, or Copa América. He started every game for Spain, significantly contributing to La Roja’s success. In the final, he assisted Nico Williams for the first goal and showcased Spain’s strong youth development, being a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy.

Coach Luis de la Fuente called up Yamal for his first senior international match on September 1, 2023, at 16 years and 50 days old, for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers against Georgia and Cyprus. Yamal debuted against Georgia, scoring in the 74th minute of a 7-1 victory.
