The song, broadcast on Fernandez’s Instagram Live, included derogatory references to French national team players, suggesting their parents are from African countries while their passports state they are French. It also featured a derogatory remark about Kylian Mbappé’s association with transgender model Ines Rau. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana responded to the incident by posting a clip of Fernandez singing the chant on his Instagram with the caption: “Football in 2024. Unabashed racism.”
French Football Federation’s Legal Response
In response, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced plans to file a lawsuit against the Argentina players and the Argentine Football Association for the “abusive remarks of a racial and discriminatory nature.” FFF president Philippe Diallo strongly condemned the actions and called on FIFA to take appropriate action.

Fernandez issued an apology, stating: “I sincerely apologize for a video posted on my Instagram during the national team’s celebrations. The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I am against discrimination in all its forms and I apologize for getting carried away by the euphoria of our Copa América celebrations. That video, that moment, those words do not reflect my way of thinking or my character. I am truly sorry.”
Fernandez’s actions have caused a significant backlash, with his teammates, particularly the French players, reportedly “very angry” about his involvement in the discriminatory chant. It remains to be seen how Fernandez will be received when he returns to Chelsea for pre-season training, and whether FIFA or the Argentine Football Association will respond to the FFF’s legal action.
