Kylian Mbappe is set to join Real Madrid this week, and will receive a signing bonus of approximately £85m (€100m), which will be paid in instalments during his tenure at the club. The 25-year-old forward, who scored 256 goals in 308 appearances for PSG, will sign a five-year contract at Santiago Bernabeu, earning £12.8m (€15m) a year after tax.
Real Madrid has long admired Mbappe and attempted to sign him in 2022. However, Mbappe chose to renew his contract at Parc des Princes for two more years. Now that the contract has expired, and Mbappe declined a one-year extension, he is free to join Real Madrid at no cost, a striking contrast to the £166m PSG paid for him six years ago.
Despite taking a pay cut to join Real Madrid, Mbappe’s departure will save PSG at least €220m (£187.5m) in gross cost. Spanish football journalist Semra Hunter comments that Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid was inevitable, and has been a topic of speculation for years. The forward had even trialled with the Under-12s when he was 11, but his parents decided he should stay in France to develop.
How Mbappe will fit into the Real Madrid team will largely depend on Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s tactics. If Ancelotti continues with a 4-4-2 formation next season, it’s possible that Mbappe and Vinicius could form a dual attack, similar to Vinicius and Rodrygo’s strategy this season.
