Oscar recipient Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role in Peaky Blinders, stating: “This is one for the fans.” Netflix has officially approved a film based on the popular series featuring Murphy as Thomas Shelby, the war veteran turned gangster who ascends the criminal ranks in 1900s Birmingham. The film is touted as a “continuation” of the series, though specifics about the plot remain confidential.
The creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight, is the writer behind the screenplay. Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the series’ inaugural season, is slated to direct the film. Knight will co-produce the project alongside Caryn Mandabach, Murphy, and Guy Heeley. The movie will be produced in conjunction with BBC Film.
Murphy expressed, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me … It is extremely satisfying to be reuniting with Steven Knight and Tom Harper for the film adaptation of Peaky Blinders.” Knight added, “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders saga. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
Harper chimed in: “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over a decade ago, we didn’t know what the series would evolve into, but we did know that the chemistry of the cast and the writing felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences worldwide on Netflix.”
Murphy was most recently seen on the big screen in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which earned him the best actor Oscar. He is currently working on his 28 Days Later sequel, 28 Years Later.
