New Alien: Romulus Trailer Evokes Classic Sci-Fi Horror

The Alien franchise seems to be returning to its horror roots. Following a brief teaser earlier this year and some eerie behind-the-scenes footage, 20th Century Studios has unveiled the first full trailer for Alien: Romulus, a standalone film directed by Fede Álvarez. The trailer promises a terrifying experience, adhering to the core elements of the original film: a small cast, a dark and isolated setting, and glimpses of the deadly alien.

The story follows a group of scavengers exploring an abandoned space station, only to become prey to a xenomorph. The film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Archie Renaux. The new poster also hints at the importance of the classic facehuggers.

Romulus marks the first new entry in the franchise since the prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which focused on the origins of the xenomorphs. Unlike those prequels, Romulus seems more akin to Prey, a standalone story in the Predator universe that thrived by not being burdened by its predecessors’ canon.

Alien: Romulus will be released in theaters on August 16th.
