Lille has appointed Bruno Genesio as their new head coach, replacing Paulo Fonseca, who departs after two years. Media reports suggest Fonseca may be moving to AC Milan.
Genesio, 57, has a rich history in Ligue 1, having previously managed Rennes and spent a decade as a midfielder at Lyon, where he later coached for four years.
“It was a no-brainer for us when Paulo left; Bruno was the only coach we contacted,” said Lille president Olivier Letang. “Bruno has a wealth of experience in football, both in Ligue 1 and in European competitions.”
Genesio, awarded the best coach in Ligue 1 for 2022, has signed a 2-year contract with Lille. His coaching journey began after a successful playing career at Lyon, Nice, and Martigues. He transitioned to coaching with roles in amateur clubs before returning to Lyon, where he held various positions, including assistant coach and head coach.
At Lyon, Genesio achieved significant success: winning a French Championship (2008), two French Cups (2008, 2012), and reaching a Champions League semi-final (2010). As head coach, he led Lyon to 185 games, securing four European qualifiers and a Europa League semi-final in 2017, while fostering young talents like Fekir, Aouar, and Ndombélé.
After a stint in China with Beijing Guoan, Genesio returned to Ligue 1 in 2021 to manage Rennes, where he led the team to European qualification and consecutive 4th place finishes. Under his guidance, Rennes set club records for points, wins, and goals in a season, earning Genesio the title of best coach in Ligue 1 for the 2021-2022 season.
“We are delighted to welcome Bruno, whose experience and vision align with our ambitions,” Letang stated. “He will help continue the progress we’ve made, focusing on performance, youth development, and the evolution of LOSC.”
