Kevin De Bruyne has suggested he could consider a move away from Manchester City, referencing a lucrative offer from a Saudi Arabian club that could potentially disrupt the champions’ line-up. De Bruyne, who joined City in August 2015, is regarded as one of the club’s all-time greats. However, turning 33 this month, the Belgian is aware his career is advancing.
“I still have one year left on my contract, so I have to consider what could happen,” he shared with Belgian newspaper HLN. “My eldest is now eight years old and has only known England. He also questions how long I will stay at City. When the time comes, we will have to handle it appropriately.”
Currently earning approximately £400,000 (€470,000) per week, De Bruyne is the highest-paid player in English football. However, the potential earnings in Saudi Arabia are enticing.
“At my age, you have to be open to all possibilities,” he continued. “You’re discussing vast amounts of money towards the end of my career. Sometimes you have to consider that. If I play there for two years, I could earn an extraordinary sum. I had to play football for 15 years to reach that amount. I might not even get there yet. Then you have to consider what that could mean for the future. But at the moment, I haven’t had to contemplate that yet.”
At City, De Bruyne has clinched six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five Carabao Cups, the Champions League, and the Fifa Club World Cup. An essential part of City’s 2022-23 treble-winning squad, he has twice been voted the Professional Footballers’ Association’s player of the year and three times as the Premier League’s top playmaker.
