Firefox Empowers Users with AI Chatbot Selection in Latest Nightly Builds

As browsers increasingly integrate AI features, Mozilla is giving users more options. On Tuesday, the company announced an opt-in experiment allowing access to various AI services in Nightly, the experimental version of Firefox. Mozilla aims to refine this feature before rolling it out to the beta and release versions of Firefox.

Users who opt in can choose their preferred AI service. Initial options include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, HuggingChat, and Le Chat Mistral, with plans to add more AI services over time.

“Providing choice in AI services is crucial,” wrote Ian Carmichael, Firefox’s senior vice president, in a blog post. “You should be able to choose the service that best meets your needs, rather than being restricted to a single provider. Additionally, these AI models are still evolving, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Offering multiple options lets users experiment and find the most helpful service for their needs.”

After selecting a preferred AI service, users can ask the chatbot to summarize webpage information, simplify language, or quiz them on the content. The goal is to let users try different chatbots and choose their favorite. Firefox emphasizes that this feature is optional, so users aren’t required to pick any chatbot if they prefer not to.

This new feature arrives as companies like Google and Microsoft have incorporated AI chatbots into their browsers. Startups like Opera and DuckDuckGo have also introduced AI chatbots to help users summarize web pages and ask questions. Mozilla’s move to provide AI service choices stands out by prioritizing user preference and flexibility.
