Enugu Rangers claimed the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) championship by defeating Bendel Insurance 2-0 in Enugu, securing an insurmountable 67 points at the top of the table. This victory, achieved with one game to spare, marks the club’s 8th NPFL title, solidifying their status as one of Nigeria’s most successful football clubs, second only to Enyimba who have 9 league titles.
After maintaining their league lead for several weeks, Rangers faced a crucial match against Bendel Insurance, knowing that anything less than a win could jeopardize their title aspirations with Remo Stars and Enyimba in close pursuit. However, Rangers seized control early, with Kenechukwu Agu scoring from a well-placed free-kick in the 32nd minute, igniting celebrations at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
The Flying Antelopes continued to press forward, and in the 65th minute, Chidiebere Nwobodo secured their victory with a second goal, easing tensions among the home crowd. The final whistle confirmed Rangers’ 2-0 win and their undisputed claim to the NPFL title.
With 67 points and their position secured, Rangers’ last league match against Gombe United serves as a victory lap, as no other team can surpass their lead. Additionally, their championship win grants them automatic qualification for the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League, while the battle for Nigeria’s second slot in the Champions League remains open among Remo Stars, Enyimba, and Shooting Stars.
