Popular street singer Habeeb Okikiola, also known as Portable, has been released from police custody after spending a night behind bars. The arrest stemmed from a dispute over an outstanding debt of ₦14 million related to the purchase of a Mercedes Benz vehicle.
Portable’s apprehension occurred in the Abule Egba area of Lagos, where he was accused of failing to settle the balance owed to a car dealer after purchasing the vehicle for ₦27 million. Reports indicate that he had only paid ₦13 million towards the purchase.
Videos of the incident circulated online, showing Portable attempting to evade arrest before being forcibly detained by law enforcement officers. The car dealer involved in the transaction was also heard in one of the videos, expressing frustration over the unpaid debt and alleging threats from the artist.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, a spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Portable was granted bail on Wednesday following his overnight detention. Both the singer and the car dealer are expected to appear at a later date to address the issue.
This isn’t the first time Portable has encountered legal troubles. In April 2023, he was arrested in Ogun State on charges of assault and theft, subsequently facing legal proceedings before being released on bail.
