French football icon Olivier Giroud is embarking on a new journey in Major League Soccer (MLS), as confirmed by the record-breaking striker himself. In an interview released on AC Milan’s official platforms, Giroud announced his departure from the Italian Serie A club to join MLS once his current contract concludes this summer. Speculation about Giroud’s move to MLS, where he is anticipated to reunite with longtime French teammate Hugo Lloris at LAFC, has been circulating for months.
Lloris made his move from Tottenham Hotspur to LAFC in late December. “My time at Milan will soon come to an end after our next two matches,” stated Giroud. “I’m immensely proud of my contributions over three seasons here. It feels like the right moment to make this announcement. Milan will forever hold a special place in my heart.”
With 57 goals in 131 appearances for France, including a pivotal role in their 2018 World Cup triumph, Giroud remains a key figure in manager Didier Deschamps’ national team plans, poised to play a significant role in the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 tournament. Having netted 14 goals for AC Milan this season, placing him fourth in Serie A, Giroud has two more opportunities to add to his tally before bidding farewell to I Rossoneri in matches against Torino on May 18 and Salernitana on May 26.
Throughout his illustrious club career, which includes stints at Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea, Giroud has amassed 285 goals in 716 appearances, clinching 13 trophies for both club and country, including the prestigious UEFA Champions League title with Chelsea in 2021. Should Giroud finalize his move to LAFC, he will bolster an attacking lineup featuring notable talents such as reigning Golden Boot winner Denis Bouanga, alongside Cristian Olivera, Mateusz Bogusz, and David Martínez.
Under the leadership of head coach Steve Cherundolo, LAFC clinched the MLS Cup title in 2022 and reached the finals of MLS Cup 2023, showcasing their status as a formidable force in Major League Soccer.
