Netflix is reportedly working on a live-action “Scooby-Doo” series, marking a new chapter for the beloved franchise. Unlike previous adaptations, this upcoming series is expected to take a dramatic approach rather than a comedic one, spanning one-hour episodes. Warner Bros. Television, known for producing Netflix hits like “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and “Dead Boy Detectives,” will handle production.
While the deal isn’t finalized, the project is reportedly in talks for a script-to-series commitment, with Berlanti Productions set to produce. Berlanti Productions, known for its work on several Netflix shows, will collaborate with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who have worked on shows such as Hulu’s “High Fidelity” and MGM+’s “From.” These producers are set to write and executive produce the series, alongside the team from their production company, Midnight Radio.
The concept of a dramatic “Scooby-Doo” series may seem unexpected to some, but there is precedent for dark takes on the franchise, such as the 2017 book “Meddling Kids” by Edgar Cantero. The success of similar adaptations like “Riverdale” and “Nancy Drew” suggests the new series could resonate with audiences, as long as it strikes the right balance between mystery and humor.
Casting for the new series will be closely watched, given the memorable performances in previous adaptations, particularly the 2002 live-action film with Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Freddie Prinze Jr. There is no word yet on the Netflix series’ release date or title.
