Google is swiftly refining its AI summaries of search results in response to recent gaffes, including notable errors like misidentifying Barack Obama as the first Muslim US president. Users took to social media to ridicule inaccurate “AI Overview” responses to queries ranging from peculiar topics like eating stones to serious inquiries about the number of Muslim US presidents.
Acknowledging these missteps, a Google spokesperson stated that they are actively addressing the issues and implementing necessary changes in accordance with their content policies. Instances such as the erroneous Obama reference have been promptly rectified.
While most AI Overviews offer reliable information, incidents like a suggestion to add glue to pizza sauce to prevent cheese from sliding off, which originated from a child’s Reddit post, raise questions about the AI’s discernment of online content.
Google recently introduced AI-generated answers to searches in the US, a significant update to its search engine. This change, which displays an AI summary at the top of search results, will soon be implemented in other countries as well, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
The move comes amid competition from AI-powered search engines like Perplexity and speculation about OpenAI developing its own AI search tool. Additionally, AI-driven searches on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp offer users an alternative to traditional search engines, praised for providing a cleaner search experience.
