Feyenoord coach Arne Slot has officially announced his upcoming appointment as the successor to Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool, effective next season.
“I can confirm that I will become the trainer there next year,” Slot revealed during a press conference.
Klopp’s decision to step down from his role as Liverpool manager at the end of the season paved the way for Slot to emerge as the leading candidate for the position.
Similar to Klopp’s farewell address, Slot took the opportunity in his pre-match press conference to bid adieu to his current club, expressing mixed emotions about departing.
“Until now, I was not thinking about this being the build-up to my last match, but that starts coming now,” Slot shared. “The feeling grows. I understand that good results help, but it is very nice to feel that people really are thinking it’s a pity that I’m leaving. That does mean a lot to me.”
Slot, 45, secured a three-year contract with Feyenoord last year after leading the team to the Eredivisie title. Despite offers from Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur, he opted to stay with Feyenoord.
Although Liverpool’s official confirmation is pending, they have reportedly agreed to a £9.4 million ($11.8m) compensation deal with Feyenoord. Sources indicate that Slot intends to bring Sipke Hulshoff, his current assistant at Feyenoord, to join his coaching staff at Liverpool. Hulshoff, 49, has been working alongside Slot at Feyenoord since 2022 and also served as a Netherlands assistant alongside former Everton manager Ronald Koeman since January 2023.
