Al-Hilal secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Al-Wehda on Monday, thanks to a last-minute goal from Aleksandar Mitrovic. This win capped off an unbeaten season for the Saudi Pro League champions.
Despite being pegged back by a second-half equalizer from Yahya Naji after Mohamed Kanno’s first-half opener, Al-Hilal triumphed with Mitrovic’s decisive 92nd-minute strike, assisted by Mohammed Al Burayk. This was Mitrovic’s 28th goal of the season, making him the league’s second top scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo set a new league record with 35 goals, surpassing the previous record held by Abderrazak Hamdallah. Al-Nassr finished second, while Al-Ahli secured third place with a 1-0 win over Al-Fayha, courtesy of a late Roberto Firmino goal.
In contrast, Abha Club faced relegation after a 2-1 defeat to bottom-placed Al-Hazem, despite an early lead from Ahmed Abdu. Goals from Muhammed Badamosi and Mohammed Al Thani sealed their fate. Al-Akhoud avoided relegation with a 2-0 win over Al-Tai, driven by goals from Saviour Godwin and Leandre Tawamba.
This historic achievement included contributions from 16 players, with Mitrovic leading the way with 28 goals, followed by Malcolm with 15, Salem Al-Dawsari with 14, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic with 11, and Saleh Al-Shehri and Michael each adding 5 goals.
This title is Al-Hilal’s 19th league championship and their second “Golden League” title, following their unbeaten season in 2010-2011. They join Al Ettifaq and Al Shabab as the only teams to have achieved unbeaten league titles in the history of the Saudi league.
Despite losing Neymar to injury, Al-Hilal’s depth and resilience ensured their continued success and dominance in the league.
