Inter Milan clinched their 20th Italian Serie A title by triumphing over their arch-rivals AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina. Francesco Acerbi scored the opening goal, heading in a corner from Benjamin Pavard’s flick-on. Marcus Thuram then netted the second goal after receiving a long ball and cutting in to strike it into the bottom corner of the goal.
England’s Fikayo Tomori managed to score for AC Milan, bringing them temporary hope. However, tempers flared in injury time, resulting in three red cards. AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez and Inter’s Denzel Dumfries were ejected for their roles in a scuffle, and AC Milan‘s captain Davide Calabria was sent off for violent conduct. Inter Milan celebrated their victory on the shared pitch as the home side for the fixture.
The win extended Inter’s lead over second-place AC Milan to 17 points with five games remaining. Despite missing chances from Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu, Inter’s dominance in the match was evident.
This historic win marked the first time in the 116 years of the Milan derby that the Serie A title was clinched. Inter’s captain, Martinez, expressed joy at their hard work and accomplishments, emphasizing their desire to continue winning more trophies.
Inter Milan achievement also elevates them above AC Milan in terms of Serie A titles, as they now hold 20 titles to Milan’s 19, only trailing behind Juventus. Under coach Simone Inzaghi, Inter Milan secured the Scudetto with five games remaining, boasting an unbeaten 27-game run in the league. The team has scored 79 goals while conceding only 18, showcasing their exceptional performance. Additionally, Inter has now won the last six derbies, matching Milan’s previous record runs from 1911-1913 and 1946-1948.
