Ralf Rangnick, the manager of Austria’s national football team, has confirmed discussions with Bayern Munich regarding the head coach position. Bayern is seeking a new head coach as Thomas Tuchel is expected to leave at the end of the season.
In an interview with Austrian outlet 90minuten, Rangnick revealed that Bayern had approached him about the role. Although he did not dismiss the possibility of taking the position, the 65-year-old indicated he would carefully consider various factors before making a decision.
“Bayern Munich reached out to me, and I informed the Austrian Football Association (OFB) about it,” said Rangnick. “We have a trusting relationship, and my focus remains on the Austrian national team. We are committed to the European Championship, and I’m comfortable here for now.”
When asked about the potential timing of a decision, Rangnick mentioned he would need to evaluate whether he wants to pursue the opportunity further if Bayern expressed clear interest in hiring him.
Rangnick emphasized that his decision wouldn’t be based on financial considerations. Instead, he is driven by the potential to make a meaningful impact and develop a successful team.
Rangnick’s extensive managerial experience includes stints at Manchester United, RB Leipzig, Schalke, and other clubs. He also served as a director of football for Red Bull Salzburg and Leipzig from 2012 to 2020, as well as briefly managing Leipzig during that period.
Bayern Munich recently saw their 11-year championship streak in the Bundesliga end, and they also suffered losses in the German Supercup and DFB-Pokal. However, they remain in the Champions League and will face Real Madrid in the semifinals.
