Nollywood Mourns as Mr. Ibu, Iconic Actor, Passes Away at 62

The passing of renowned Nollywood actor John Okafor, famously known as Mr. Ibu, at the age of 62, has plunged Nigerians into mourning.

Actors Guild of Nigeria President Emeka Rollas conveyed the heartbreaking news, expressing, “With profound grief, I announce the loss of Mr. Ibu.” Okafor’s demise resulted from a cardiac arrest.

Okafor gained prominence two decades ago through his role in the film “Mr. Ibu,” which earned him his enduring nickname. Regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest comic performances, his legacy in the genre is unparalleled.

His illustrious career extended to over 200 Nollywood productions, including “Keziah,” “9 Wives,” and numerous sequels to his iconic role.

Actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie bid farewell, saying, “Rest well, sir,” while Law professor and former UN rapporteur Joy Ezeilo described him as a “beloved” entertainer who brought joy to many households.

Nigeria’s Culture Minister Hannatu Musawa hailed Okafor as a household name that brought smiles to families nationwide.

Reports indicate Okafor passed away at an undisclosed Lagos hospital. His health challenges became public knowledge last year, leading to a crowdfunding initiative for his medical expenses, which resulted in the amputation of one of his legs in November.
