Renowned Nigerian sprinter, Tobi Amusan, showcased her exceptional talent by clinching victory in the women’s 100m hurdles Round 1 heat at the 13th Africa Games held in Ghana.Amusan achieved this feat with an impressive time of 13.03 seconds, securing her place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Africa Games.
However, despite Amusan’s triumph, Team Nigeria faced setbacks in the men’s and women’s 100m events, where they conceded the gold medals to Cameroon and Gambia, respectively. Usheoritse Itsekiri, with a time of 10.23 seconds, surprisingly fell short in the men’s 100m, losing to Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme who finished at 10.14 seconds. Additionally, in the women’s 100m, Olayinka Olajide secured the bronze with a time of 11.55 seconds, trailing behind Miriam Bittaye of Gambia and Alyse Miccoy of Liberia who clinched the gold and silver medals, respectively.
Despite these challenges, Team Nigeria remains on the brink of a historic achievement, as they are just one medal away from becoming the first country to reach 300 medals in athletics at the African Games. Currently occupying the second position on the medal table, Nigeria has secured an impressive tally of 31 gold, 22 silver, and 32 bronze medals.
