Jose Peseiro, the Portuguese tactician who has helmed the Super Eagles of Nigeria for the past 22 months, has officially confirmed his exit as the team’s head coach. The announcement was made via Peseiro’s official social media platform X on Friday, March 1, 2024.
Peseiro’s decision comes as a surprise to many, especially in light of the Super Eagles’ commendable performance at AFCON 2023, where they reached the tournament’s semi-finals. With speculation rife about a possible contract extension, given Peseiro’s fulfillment of specified requirements, the news of his departure has raised eyebrows within the football community.
Despite guiding the team through a successful qualifying campaign for the AFCON tournament and overseeing marked improvements in their playing style and tactical approach, negotiations between Peseiro and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) failed to yield an agreement on a new contract.
In his statement on social media, Peseiro hinted at potential managerial opportunities elsewhere in Africa, fuelling speculation about his next destination ahead of AFCON 2025.
