AMVCA 2024 Nominations: A Whirlwind Of Surprises, Snubs And Controversies

The announcement of the nominations for the next AMVCAs provokes strong reactions, with surprises, disappointments and nuances that stand out. This year, the categories of Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress will now be determined by a special jury, ending public voting.

Among the highlights of the nominations evening, we particularly note the strong presence of the film “Over the Bridge” by Tolu Ajayi which received no less than 12 nominations, impressive for a film which has not yet made its cinema debut in Nigeria.

However, significant snubs have also attracted attention. Notably the absence of the film “Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story” in the Best Film category, despite its box office success and its nominations in other major categories. Likewise, the omission of Chimezie Imo for his role in “Breath of Life” for Best Actor is a disconcerting surprise, especially when compared to the nominations of other cast members.

Shocking nuances were also observed, including the absence of the film “Áfàméfùnà” in the Best Indigenous Language Film (West Africa) category, which was seen as an affront to such an acclaimed film. Likewise, the fact that Ozzy Agu was not nominated for Best Actor for his role in “Over the Bridge” raises questions about the jury’s selection criteria.

In short, the AMVCA 2024 nominations are shrouded in controversy and surprise, offering a fascinating insight into the African film industry. It remains to be seen how the winners will be chosen and what discussions these choices will generate among cinema enthusiasts and industry professionals.
