AFCON 2023: Unrest Erupts in Ivory Coast Following Disappointing Defeat to Equatorial Guinea


Hopes were high for Ivory Coast as they entered the AFCON 2023 competition, anticipating a commendable performance. However, the reality has starkly contrasted with expectations, leading to a wave of discontent among supporters. The frustration boiled over into violence after Ivory Coast suffered a 4-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea.

In the aftermath of the game played on Monday, January 21, 2024, enraged fans vented their displeasure by vandalizing the team bus. Despite this setback, Ivory Coast still has a chance to secure a spot in the Round of 16 through the best losers route, providing a glimmer of hope to remain in the competition.


Equatorial Guinea currently leads the group with seven points, tied with Nigeria. However, they secure the top spot based on a superior goal difference, having scored seven goals in total.
