Wizkid Makes History as First African Musician to Win BRIT Billion Award

A groundbreaking moment in the African Music Industry as Wizkid, the Afropop king, achieves a remarkable feat by becoming the first African musician to win the prestigious BRIT Billion Award presented by the British Phonographic Industry music award body in recognition of his latest achievement in Britain. 

Fresh from the success of his sold-out “More Love, Less Ego” tour at the Totteham Hotspur stadium on July 29, 2023, Wizkid was bestowed with the BRIT award after the exhilarating concert. The historic event saw Wizkid as the first and only African artist to headline and perform at the iconic Totteham stadium, which was filled to its 62,850 capacity on Saturday.

The well-deserved BRIT Billion Award was presented to the Afrobeats maestro for amassing an astounding one billion streams in the United Kingdom. The official Twitter page of the Brit Awards shared the news on Monday, July 31, 2023, celebrating Wizkid’s remarkable achievement: “It’s one billion UK streams for @wizkidayo, who was presented with his BRIT Billion Award while in London for his incredible show at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”

Wizkid’s fame has reached global heights, partly due to his collaborations with top American artists, such as Beyoncé on the Grammy-winning song “Brown Skin Girl” in 2021 and his mega-hit “One Dance” with Drake in 2016, which achieved six times Platinum certification in the UK, selling over 3.6 million units.

The “More Love, Less Ego” concert featured outstanding performances by notable acts like The Caveman, Masego, Skyla Tyla, and Wande Coal, who delighted the audience with their hit songs.
