The De Niro family has experienced an indescribable tragedy.
According to Drena De Niro, Robert De Niro’s grandson Leandro De Niro Rodriguez has died. Drena, who is the daughter of the renowned actor and his ex-wife Diahnne Abbott, confirmed the heartbreaking news on July 2nd through a statement.
In an Instagram post featuring a photo of Leandro, she expressed her deep love for her “darling boy” and the immense impact he had on her life. Drena wished she could be with him and acknowledged the challenge of living without him, but vowed to carry on and spread the love and light that he brought into her life.
The 51-year-old actress, who shares Leandro with artist Carlos Mare, apologized to her late son and emphasized how much he was loved and cherished. She expressed her sorrow that love alone couldn’t save him.
Carlos has not publicly commented on the death, although he shared a blacked-out image on his Instagram page, prompting condolences from many users.
E! News reached out to Robert De Niro’s representative for a statement but has not received a response.
Like his grandfather and mother, Leandro was involved in acting. Notably, he appeared alongside Drena in the 2018 film A Star Is Born, portraying the son of Dave Chappelle’s character. Leandro also had acting credits in the 2005 film The Collection and the 2018 film Cabaret Maxime, both of which featured his mother.
The news of Leandro’s passing comes a little over a month after he celebrated Mother’s Day with Drena. In a May 14 Instagram post, they spent the day together watching the comedy film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, creating cherished memories.
In May, Robert De Niro welcomed a daughter named Gia Virginia Chen De Niro with his girlfriend Tiffany Chen. Gia is the first child for the couple and the seventh child for the Academy Award-winning actor.
