Google unveiled the Pixel Tablet at Google I/O 2023, officially releasing it a year after teasing it in 2022. The Pixel Tablet features a 10.95-inch display, 8GB of RAM, and storage options of 128GB or 256GB. Powered by the Google Tensor G2 processor, it comes in three color options and includes an 8MP camera on both the front and back. Users can utilize the Pixel Tablet as a smart home control hub in Hub Mode, and it integrates the Google TV app and Chromecast. The starting price for the Pixel Tablet is $499 in the US and £599 in the UK, offering a versatile and immersive tablet experience.
Another noteworthy announcement at Google I/O 2023 introduced Bard, Google’s AI language model. Similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Bard has the ability to generate poetry, fiction, and more. Accessible to users worldwide, Bard received updates to enhance its capabilities, including advanced math, improved reasoning skills, coding capabilities, and support for over 180 countries and territories. Additionally, Bard is evolving to become more visual, enabling users to incorporate images with text in their prompts. Google has plans to integrate Adobe Firefly in the future to generate high-quality images.
Google is also preparing for the release of Wear OS 4, despite Wear OS 3 still being in the process of being rolled out. Wear OS 4 is expected to deliver improved battery life, enhanced accessibility features, and a backup/restore option. It will also provide better integration with smart home devices, enabling users to control lighting, media, and preview camera notifications. Currently, Wear OS 4 is available only in a developer preview and emulator, with wider availability anticipated later this year.
In addition to these major announcements, Google I/O 2023 showcased several other significant updates. Google Search introduced AI snapshots, a notable feature that presents AI-powered answers at the top of search results, offering users more context and the ability to narrow down information through follow-up questions. AI snapshots leverage the advancements of PaLM 2, an updated version of Google’s large language model, which incorporates improvements in reasoning, coding, and translation.
The Google Home app underwent a substantial revamp, presenting users with an improved camera interface, a new Favorites tab, and expanded device support. Google Perspectives, a new feature within Google Search, gathers answers from various websites, including Reddit, Stack Overflow, YouTube, and personal blogs, to provide users with insights from real people.
Photography enthusiasts will be pleased with the introduction of Google Photos’ AI editing feature called Magic Editor. This powerful tool allows users to edit their photos, such as removing unwanted elements from the background, enhancing the sky, and moving objects. Initially, the Magic Editor will be available in early access to select Pixel users.
Formerly known as Google’s AI tools for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Gmail, Duet AI also brought exciting developments. Duet AI encompasses features like composing emails and generating images from text in Slides, empowering users to enhance productivity and efficiency. Currently, these features are accessible to those who are on the waitlist.
