A law aimed at reducing brain drain by requiring Nigerian medical doctors to practice in the nation for at least five years before traveling overseas has passed second reading in the House of Representatives.
Ganiyu Johnson sponsored a bill titled “A bill to amend the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act, Cap. M379, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to require any Nigeria-trained medical or dental practitioner to practice in Nigeria for a minimum of five years before being granted a full license by the council in order to make quality health services available to Nigeria.”
Johnson, who led the debate at Thursday’s plenary, said the bill if passed, will essentially halt the vast flight of doctors abroad.
The Chairman Nigeria Medical Association shared his view on the matter.
