Jussie Smollett, a former member of the cast of Empire, has hired attorneys to appeal his December 2021 conviction for fabricating a homophobic and racial attack on himself and lying to Chicago police about it.
A Cook County court recently gave Smollett a 150-day prison term and a two-year probationary period. A $25,000 fine and more than $120,000 in reparations were also added to his list of court-ordered obligations.
But six days later, an appeals court decided that Jussie Smollett should be released from custody while his conviction was being challenged, and he was able to leave jail.
