Wizkid and Tems have become the most recent Africans to win the NAACP Image Awards at the 54th edition of the ceremony.
The 2023 NAACP Image Awards which spans a week, aims to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and performances of people of color across more than eighty categories.
Tems continued her international ascension as she won the award for Outstanding International Song with her rendition of ‘No Woman, No Cry’ off the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film while Rihanna received the award for Outstanding Video/Visual Album for ‘Lift Me Up,’ which credits Tems as a songwriter.
In the category of Outstanding Duo, Group, or Collaboration (Contemporary), Chris Brown’s ‘Call Me Every Day’ featuring Wizkid emerged as the winner, beating out other notable entries such as ‘MOVE’ by Beyoncé featuring Grace Jones and Tems and ‘Wait For U’ by Future featuring Drake and Tems.
Beyoncé took home the most awards, including Outstanding Female Artiste, Outstanding Soul/R&B song for ‘Cuff It’ and Outstanding Album for ‘Renaissance.’
Other notable winners include Silk Sonic for Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (Traditional) for ‘Love’s Train,’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation Album, Quavo and Takeoff for Outstanding Hip Hop/Rap Song for ‘Hotel Lobby,’ and Erica Campbell for Outstanding Gospel/Christian Song for ‘Positive’, amongst other winners.
