Multi-genre singer/songwriter who is set to unleash her vocal magic & music prowess with a drive towards setting a pace in the music industry, KEMI LOPEZ, had a lot to say about how she has built her music career and the sacrifices she has made to come this far.
During this exclusive chat with the entertainment crew, she disclosed that she had a chance to participate in one of the biggest singing competitions in the world ‘American Idol‘ but turned down the offer for reasons disclosed in the video.
Sharing how music started for her, Kemi said she is Yoruba and speaks Yoruba fluently, she is a Christian and she has sung at church but she got her star after she signed a deal back in the States and the song was in the charts and doing well but it was not the right thing for her so they parted ways and she took a break and now she’s back.
You turned down a Hollywood contract why?
Because the contract was very thick and they were going to buy my life away so I decided I didn’t want to do that either. I like to think ahead.
It’s good to be smart about everything, I am a Christain and a big believer in timing and I think whenever it’s time for something, God is going to open the way and let it happen. It’s good not to force stuff and retain your integrity.
How did music begin professionally for you?
Well, it started with me just staying around the house. Watching Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey conquering every song, they are my two idols and that was how it started. I started writing songs and I started getting more exposed to studio life and performances and I loved it. That’s my niche.
I was on American idol and I got to the point where they tell you if you’re going to Hollywood or not. They sent me a plane ticket with the contract.
They sent it on Sunday and I was supposed to get on the plane on a Monday I only had a few hours to read the contract and decide if that was what I wanted to do and that was when I turned it down.
