In response to a reported missing soldier on leave, the Nigerian Army declared war in the Abia and Amangwu communities in the Ohafia Local Government Area.
According to reports, the forces have killed at least 10 locals and burned down more than 50 homes in the neighbourhood.
The allegedly vanished soldier, who was on leave, was said to have visited his village of Ikwun in Cross Rivers State and went missing while returning at the border between Amuma Ohafia and Amangwu (about 3 kilometres from Amangwu).
During the search for the aforementioned missing soldier, troops from the brigade allegedly entered the Amangwu neighbourhood.
According to reports, the soldiers shot randomly, causing the locals to flee for their lives.
Many of the locals were reportedly detained by the military men however, some were still missing.
Some of the indigenous who escaped the invasion’s onslaught into the nearby bushes and villages have reportedly still not returned home because the occupation forces are reportedly still laying siege to the damaged town.
According to reports, no one is permitted to enter or exit Amangwu as the soldiers keep up their assault, allegedly smashing into homes and robbing some individuals of their possessions.
Local resident Umah claimed that his younger brother was one of the bike riders slain on Sunday by soldiers who ambushed them. Umah claimed to be speaking from his hiding place inside the woods.
He equally disclosed that a woman came home from Aba last week to bury her husband, and in the wake of the military invasion, she died her body was yet to be taken to the mortuary as nobody could go in to bring it out from their house.
“The woman came back last week to bury her husband and on the first day of the invasion, she collapsed and died and the body is yet to be taken to the mortuary because nobody is allowed in or out of Amangwu.”
A poultry farmer in the area, Kalu said he and his attendants left their poultry farm with over 1,000 birds and fled the community and lamented he did not know the fate of the birds.
According to Kalu, “As I talk to you, my village, Amangwu Ohafia has been invaded by the army garrison in Ohafia. Since Thursday (last week) since the invasion commenced, over ten people have been killed.”
“Two youths were shot dead yesterday (Sunday), and the villagers have all fled into the bush,” he lamented.
“In March this year, Amangwu was invaded by the same army in Ohafia and about 40 houses were burnt by the army, those houses are still there not yet rebuilt.
“They claimed their reason for that mayhem was that they’re looking for the IPOB, but I don’t know the reason they will give for this one.”
