Oba Olokunbola Adedoyin, the traditional ruler of Ondo State’s Ikun Akoko region, and his family narrowly escaped murder as enraged youths went on the rampage.
They claimed that since he arrived on the throne 19 years ago, the monarch, who presented himself as a “born-again Christian,” has refused to carry out various rituals to ward against disasters.
He said, “They stormed the palace and threw palm leaves at the palace. After that, they moved to the only petrol station in the town, owned by the Oba, and torched a part of it during the protest.”
However, the traditional leader claimed that ever since he was appointed Onikun of Ikun, he had been making every effort to encourage growth in the town.
Adedoyin, who has been in power for 19 years, claimed the teenagers made death threats before attacking his gas station, where three generators worth N1.5 million were vandalized and an employee was hacked.
He identified himself as a prayer warrior who has been interceding for the neighbourhood together with others.
Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, the state police public relations officer, verified the incident and said that the order had been restored.
