Over the years several Nigerian artists have had great successes both right here and on the international music stage.
Some of these artists have made their way to the global music scene by collaborating with international artists to produce a spectacular hit track that will make waves on the global music scene, sometimes this could be a song featuring a foreign artiste or vice versa.
Just so you know, some of these collaborations helped put some of our Nigerian artistes on the foreign map.
So, to the Gen Z thinking Nigerian and foreign artists’ collaboration just began, take a seat and let’s enlighten you, and to the old G’s let’s go down memory lane together as we talk about 5 CLASSIC NIGERIAN AND FOREIGN artists COLLABORATIONS.
- THE PULSE FT. BUSTA RHYMES: SOTE (REMIX)
The Pulse, which was made up of six talented youngsters, was the winner of the 2009 edition of the “STAR QUEST” competition. Fortunately for them, they were rewarded with a recording contract with Kennis Music.
Nigerian Breweries also orchestrated a collaboration between The Pulse and American rapper, Busta Rhymes, who was in the country for the annual Star Mega Jam concert. They collaborated and remixed the group hit song “I Go Cry Sote”.
- SOUND SULTAN FT. WYCLEF JEAN: KING OF MY COUNTRY
The late iconic singer Sound Sultan is one of those that can’t be overlooked when we talk about international collaborations as he seems to be one of the forerunners.
The “King of My Country” is one of the patriotic songs from the singer that praises his country Nigeria.
The two very strong-voiced artists (Late Sound Sultan and Wyclef Jean) put together a track that some would call a musical masterpiece.
- 2BABA FT. BEENIE MAN AND REGGIE ROCKSTONE: NFANA IBAGA (REMIX)
To say 2Baba is a music legend is an understatement because this collaboration came when social media was not a big thing. The original song came on the international pack of 2face Idibia’s classic album, Face2Face in 2004.
2Baba got Jamaican dancehall star Beenie Man and Ghanaian rapper Reggie Rockstone to feature on this remix, which was released in 2008. The video was shot in Ghana.
- D’BANJ FT. SNOOP DOG: MR ENDOWED (REMIX)
In the late 2000’s, D’Banj and his Mo’Hits crew ruled Africa, but D’Banj did not limit himself to just ruling Africa, he wanted to break into the US market and become popular globally.
This was the first step in his bid to fulfil his desires, as he teamed up with US rap legend Snoop Dogg on this massive one, as they made this huge remake of his song, ‘Mr Endowed’, which had already become a smash hit.
The remix for the song is widely believed to be Nigeria’s most successful international collaboration to date, as it even won the “Most Gifted Male Video” award at the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards.
- P-SQUARE FT. AKON: CHOP MY MONEY (REMIX)
“Akon, P-Square, Mr. May D, convict music” was a common line in the mouths of everyone when this song was released in 2012.
‘Chop My Money’ was everyone’s favourite at the time even as it became popular worldwide. In fact, this song featuring Akon and May D is still one of P-Square’s biggest songs of all time.
Believe me, you can’t deny the fact that this song was a monstrous nationwide jam.
