Unlike now when there are so many things competing for our attention, back in the day, the Nollywood film industry kept many of us glued to our screens. We might diss the quality and storylines every now and then because now we know better.
Today let’s throw it back to when we didn’t know better and this was all we had. Here are 5 EVERGREEN NOLLYWOOD MOVIES.
- KARISHIKA
This classic 1996 Nollywood horror film tells the story of a girl named Karishika, who was sent by Lucifer to the world to kill, destroy and tempt people in order to increase the population in hell.
The movie includes stars like; Becky Ngozi Okorie, Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Sandra Achums, and others. It was so scary back then, but now you would be wondering what’s so horrible about this film though.
- ISSAKABA
This film told the story of community vigilante boys fighting against criminality like armed robbery and murder cases that put fear and panic in the community.
It was first released in early 2000, and the main actor who is loved and cherished by everyone, Sam Dede did absolute magic in the movie. When talking about classic action movies, Issakaba is one of them.
Fun fact about Issakaba, it is Bakassi spelt backwards.
- OSUOFIA IN LONDON
When it comes to the funniest Nollywood movies to have ever been produced and released, Osuofia in London will be in the top three, no cap.
Osuofia in London follows the travels of hunter Osuofia played by Nkem Owoh, who leaves Nigeria for London to inherit his late brother’s wealth.
While he was named the sole beneficiary, Osuofia also inherits his late brother’s fiancée Samantha who accompanied him back to Nigeria but finds it difficult to adapt to the African tradition and aggression from the hunter’s wife.
This film helped most Nigerians and other countries laugh away their sorrows no doubt.
- AKI NA UKWA
Can this list be complete without Aki Na Ukwa, a big NO! This Nigerian family comedy tells the tale of two brothers who cause complete chaos at their home, in their school, and basically in their whole village.
The movie received favourable reviews at its release and has since been hailed as one of the greatest works of Nigerian cinema, largely due to the introduction of Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedieze in the key parts, respectively portraying PawPaw and Aki. Even the remark could not beat this classic film.
- LIVING IN BONDAGE
When talking about classic films this particular film is one of the greatest of all time. It tells the story of a man who is unhappy with his financial situation. When he runs into his former friend Paul, who is now wealthy, his dissatisfaction worsens.
After giving it some thought, Paul reveals to Andy the secret to his wealth: a money ritual that calls for the death of a loved one. This was the money ritual movie that birthed all other Nigerian ritual movies.
Even after a remake of this movie in 2019, many people went back to find the 1992 classic.
