The Lagos State Government has warned residents of the waterfront communities of affluent Ikoyi, Lekki, and Victoria Island as well as the coastal regions of Epe and Badagry to be cautious of backflow caused by the high tide in the Lagos Lagoon.
Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tunji Bello issued the warning.
Bello said that the lagoon’s high tide had made it difficult for storm runoff from the various channels to discharge into the lagoon properly. He added that this may have resulted in stagnation into the streets and major roads until the lagoon receded to allow a discharge of the channels.
Residents of the vulnerable areas on Lagos Island and adjacent coastal communities have been instructed to continuously monitor accidental rainfall, ensure situational awareness at all times, avoid dropping trash into drains, and frequently clean their tertiary drains.
Bello reaffirmed the earlier flood warning issued by the state government, warning all people living along the Ogun River to be vigilant during these times, especially those in Ketu, Alapere, Agric, Owode Onirin, Ajegunle, Alagbole, Kara, Isheri, Olowora, Araromi, the Otun Orisha community, Agiliti, Maidan, Mile 12, Odo Ogun, Owode Elede.
The commissioner also disclosed that the state government had started clearing massive amounts of drainage and building new channels, in addition to the ongoing deployment of the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to clear manholes and other obstructions so that the drains could function to their fullest capacity to contain run-offs.
