A Spanish judge has ordered Colombian singer Shakira to stand trial for allegedly failing to pay thirteen point nine million dollars in taxes between 2012 and 2014, as prosecutors are looking to impose an eight-year prison sentence.
The forty-five-year-old singer who has denied the crime will also face a hefty fine alongside the sentence if she is found guilty of tax evasion.
According to reports, Shakira had already rejected a plea agreement which would have spared her a trial, insisting she only lived in Spain for part of the year during that two-year period.
Shakira’s PR firm also maintains that she has already paid off all of the back tax debt, alongside an additional two point eight million dollars in interest.
The singer is currently facing six counts of tax fraud, per the court which is based in a town near Barcelona.
Just so you know, the Grammy Award winner had been linked to the European country after she began dating Barcelona soccer player Gerard Pique back in 2010.
The couple, who share two children, broke up this year after being together for over a decade in what might become a messy separation.
