A Sad Sunday for Nigerians as their favourite fighters, Usman Kamaru and Anthony Joshua were defeated early Sunday morning in their respective Title bout.
A few hours after Nigerian-born British boxer, Anthony Joshua, lost the opportunity to reclaim his heavyweight title, Kamaru Usman, also lost the UFC welterweight championship title.
Usman was defeated by British fighter Leon Edwards, who took the victory in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
With a close-to-call head-kick knockout in the main event of UFC 278 on Sunday morning, Edwards rediscovered his mojo.
Edwards had the first takedown of the nearly flawless champion in Round 1, but he was unable to sustain any momentum in the subsequent rounds.
Even though Usman’s pace dropped in Round 5, the champion was likely headed for a unanimous decision victory as Edwards appeared defeated in his corner as his camp pleaded with him to pick up the tempo in the decisive round.
At 4:04 in Round 5, Edwards suddenly fired off a right jab and a left head kick that instantly knocked Usman out.
Edwards improved to 20-3 (1 NC) with the win over Usman. His undefeated streak improved to 11. It was his first loss in nine years.
“I feel great. They all said I couldn’t do it, they all said I couldn’t do it. Look at me now.
“It doesn’t matter. From the trenches. I’m built like this. I go until the final bell. Pound-for-pound, headshot, dead,” Edwards said while reacting to the win.
