Former Niger Delta militant Asari Dokubo made a surprise outing on Saturday in Rivers State as he was decked in traditional regalia.

The leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo in a video with his entourage of fierce-looking and heavily armed guards was recorded walking to an event on Saturday.

Some of his armed men swarmed around him, some of them brandishing rocket launchers and sophisticated weapons.His showy exhibition and regalia, however, have drawn comments and criticism on social media.

A Twitter user @Stingray101 wrote, “Can this one happen in America, someone will just be walking along the road with such arms well I am not surprised at all Nigeria is lawless.”

Nevertheless, reacting to the video, Nyma Akashat Zibiri said,“When I saw the video over the weekend, my fear was that if we lose our democracy and our structure of governance we will fall back to local warlords.

“This is a local warlord. In the Ijaw Area, you are not born yet to call their name without respect and humility.

“Even the government in power knows better than to be-little Asari Dokubo so when you see him doing this, it’s a kind of reminder.

“I don’t know what they are asking for this time around but this is probably a reminder to the people in power that, we are still here, we are the powers that bib.

“Whatever kind of deterioration of our unity and sovereignty has gotten us to bring these guys back, this is bad.

“Asari had left this country for a while, went to start a school in the Benin Republic, his university, and he piped low for a while.

“The government said they surrounded their arms and ammunition, you would expect that, that sanity would be maintained by any government. The fear of this coming back and us reducing to local warlords is not something I had desired.”

Beecee Ugboh said, “When a system is not working, when a system is not functional, and everybody takes advantage of the loophole to show forth their power.

“So everyone is looking around and saying, okay it seems like a particular set of people are doing so so and so and the government is really not doing anything about it, why would I want to suppress myself when I can also do mine since the government is not paying attention.

“That’s taking advantage of the inadequacy of government, and it shows, after all, there’s no system, I would point out that, after all, you have not held this person, why would you want to hold me?

I would have wanted Asari as a person to calm down because was it a ceremony he was going to? I don’t know.

Was he going to fight somebody? I don’t know. The entourage around him was just too much for whatever ceremony it is they were going for…
