Beyonce Removes ‘Milkshake’ From ‘Energy’ After Kelis Called Her Out For Theft

Beyoncé has removed the sample of ‘Milkshake’ from her new song ‘Energy’ off her new album ‘Renaissance’ on some streaming platforms after singer Kelis claimed it was an act of theft for using the song without her permission.

According to sources, the sample can no longer be heard on Spotify and some streaming services, however, it does remain in the version on Apple Music and YouTube, where listeners can still hear the “la-la, la, la…la” line from the song ‘Milkshake.’

Representatives for Beyoncé are yet to reveal the reasoning behind its removal, but it likely has to do with the fact that Kelis herself vocally disapproved of the use of her song, which still credits the Neptunes, a.k.a Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, as ‘Milkshake’s’ principal songwriters.

If you would recall, Kelis took to her Instagram last week in a series of posts to call out Beyonce and The Neptunes, claiming she was not informed that her 2003 song would be interpolated, calling the move an act of theft.

She wrote, “It’s not a collab it’s theft. My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding… I heard about this the same way everyone else did.

“Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”

Kelis then added that it should have been human decency for Beyoncé to inform her beforehand that she intended on interpolating parts of the song.

Just so you know, interpolation takes an existing sound and alters it, whereas sampling takes directly from a song with no changes.
