Meet Obasola Israel, a self-taught animator/ illustrator who has been drawing traditionally since he was a child and graduated to digital art around 2018.
In 2020 during the lockdown, he started animating and making music visualizers, and then in 2021, he started an animated series called ‘Orisa’.
An animated series is a set of animated works with a common series title, usually related to one another.
Animated television series had historically been used for comedy, like the cartoons, a piece of art, usually developed for humorous intent, and so, called cartoon series.
However, more recently animated television series have fallen into other genres, such as action / adventure series like Speed Racer and G.I. Joe.
Like other television series, films, including animated films, animated series can be of a wide variety of genres and can also have different demographic target audiences.
What Is Orisa About?
Orisa is about the Nigerian god – A spirit that most Yoruba religious belief can interact directly with human beings, often ritually invoked to influence human affairs or communicate messages from the spirit world.
For my animated series, “Orisa”, I just came out with some comical ideas on how to bring them to live and give them plot and stories of their own but they kind of deviate from historical accuracy.
There are just original ideas and a lot of people don’t like it but a lot of people enjoy the fact that it’s original and then they get to see these characters as heroes and as everyday characters.
What Inspires Your Animation?
One thing i try to go for is ‘Relativity’, i feel like, in some level, we have all lived the same life and it’s always nice to see someone that has experienced that or can bring out something that you have in your head but you cannot visualize yet and then i bring it to life and you are like, yea this is it.
Sometimes i have original stories that i want to tell if i am trying to tell a story and i try to be funny.
Here’s seven animation phases to become an animator:
- Researching
- Script
- Storyboard
- Art Direction
- Recording the voiceover narration
