The 2022 BET Awards held in the early hours of this morning at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles and Nigerian music was well represented.
Wizkid made a historic record with his song ‘Esssence’ featuring Tems and Justin Bieber.
It won the ‘Best Collaboration’ category making it the first Nigerian and African song and well as Wizkid the first Nigerian and African to clinch the award category outside the normal ‘Best International Category.’
Tems who got three nominations for Best New Artist, Best International Act, and Best Collaboration for Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ remix featuring Justin Bieber, won the award for Best International Act.
With her win at the 2022 BET awards, Tems joins Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy as Nigerians who have won the BET Awards.
Receiving the award, Tems urged women and girls to continue on their chosen path, adding that the hard work will soon pay off.
She said:
“Thank you so much for this, thank you so much. It’s an honour…
“I mean, this is my first award show that I’m winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home.
“Where I’m from, things like this don’t happen.”
Furthermore, Nigerian artiste/producer Pheelz delivered an amazing performance on the red carpet at the pre-award show, while and Fireboy DML graced the main stage to perform his songs ‘Playboy’ and ‘Peru’.
Other big winners of the night include, Bruno Mars, Anderson. Paak (Silk Sonic) winning the Best Group, and Album of the Year category for ‘An Evening with Silk Sonic’.
The Weeknd won the Best Male R&B/Pop Artiste, while Best Female R&B/Pop Artiste went to Jazmine Sullivan.
Best Female Hip Hop Artiste went to Megan Thee Stallion, and the Best Male Hip Hop Artist went to Kendrick Lamar.
Latto won the Best New Artist category, while BET Her went to Mary J Blige for ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’.
Hip Hop and RnB maestro cum entrepreneur Diddy also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the industry.
