A good TV theme song is catchy, fun to watch, and helps to set the tone for the whole show. Sadly, the golden age of TV theme songs ended years ago.
These days, you’re far more likely to hear a short instrumental piece or an existing song than lyrics written and recorded just for the opening credits.
Fortunately, there are still many classics to look and listen back on, including several performed by some pretty big stars.
If the opening credits are designed to hold the attention of the viewers, then these TV theme songs have done that and more.
Let’s take a look at ARTISTES BEHIND SOME TV THEMED SONGS.
- PROUD FAMILY
The 2000s featured several animated shows and ‘The Proud Family’ comes in at the very top.
The theme song of the show was sung by Solange Knowles, who was following in the footsteps of her big sister Beyonce.
Before her breakthrough, singing the theme song for ‘The Proud Family’ was one of Solange’s first opportunities to shine, with backing vocals provided by none other than Destiny Child.
- A DIFFERENT WORLD
Although this TV show theme song remained the same with different variations, undoubtedly the best version belongs to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
The show, which was a spinoff of the Cosby Show, shows what life was like and how it influenced generations of Black kids.
It was written by Dawn Lewis who also co-starred as Jaleesa Vinson. Aretha Franklin’s soulful rendition ranks it among the best theme show performances in the history of TV.
- FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR
If the job of a television theme sequence is to prepare you for the show to come, no one did it better than Will Smith with his television debut.
Thanks to his rap style, as many viewers were already familiar with his lighthearted tone.
The fun lyrics, bright imagery and charm of Smith did the rest, as proven by an entire generation of fans who know this entire song by heart.
- MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS
“Go Go Power Rangers” served as the opening theme for the 1993 show’s first three seasons. It was written and produced by Ron Wasserman under the name Aaron Waters.
The original cut was slightly altered and repurposed for the mini-series Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers in 1996.
The title also became the franchise’s catchphrase, which was then incorporated into several other areas of the show and film series.
The theme song was so dope, I would bet most people still remember it today.
- LIVING SINGLE
From the outset, ‘Living Single’ was a barrier-breaking TV show, as it centered on the lives of four Black women in New York City.
The theme song, written and performed by Queen Latifiah, one of the most acclaimed MCs in hip-hop, was a certified banger.
With Queen Latifah lending her skills as an MC and producing the track, the Living Single theme song instantly became an all-time favourite.
