When “Buga” dropped weeks ago, I was not the only one who thought the song wasn’t all that.
In fact, most people thought it was average, as evidenced by what people said on social media immediately after the release.
But in the days that have passed, “Buga” have become sort of a big hit in the country. It’s now looking like Kizz Daniel might have his follow-up hit to “Barnabas” after all.
With the rise of “Buga” to become one of the hottest tunes right now, a lot of conversations on Kizz Daniel’s artistry are starting to surface. All that’s okay. Kizz Daniel is a very good artist and he’s got sauce.
The only problem with that is when people start acting like “Buga” is some kind of masterpiece. It isn’t. As a matter of fact, it’s not as good as any song on his last EP. But the song has benefited from hype and it has now become an inevitable tune across Nigeria.
Like I said at the time of release, “Buga” is just a fun song and it shouldn’t be made to mean anything more than that because then, it may fall short of the standards. It’s not in the same ballpark as beautiful well-written hits that Kizz Daniel has dropped lately at all. But it is still a quite fun song.
I went on to say:
“Buga” is that song that will be on your playlist for two weeks tops. Then you move on to whatever’s new after that. But that’s how it’s supposed to be. Kizz Daniel featuring Tekno isn’t exactly a collaboration anyone is clamoring for so there are no expectations.
Well, turns out I was wrong. Wrong because even if you wanted to take that song out of your playlist, you’ll still hear it everywhere. It’s literally everywhere. On the streets, on TikTok, on Instagram, on the Radio. You can’t run away from “Buga.”
But I still maintain that all that’s due to promotion. The song itself, at best, is average. There’s nothing to it. Kizz Daniel has a lot of better songs and people who are now obsessing over this one are just overrating it.
