In this segment, Dr. Okpare Collins lectured us on ‘Cataracts’. He talked about the major causes, symptoms, and how to manage cataract.
A cataract is a dense, cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye. A cataract begins when proteins in the eye form clumps that prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina.
Most cataracts develop slowly over the course of years and age is one of the major factors of Cataract.
Cataract: All You Need To Know
The difference between Glaucoma and Cataracts s is that they have different causes. Glaucoma is caused by a buildup of fluid inside your eye. Cataracts are caused by an accumulation of broken-down proteins in your eye.
Signs and symptoms of cataracts include:
Clouded, blurred or dim vision.
Increasing difficulty with vision at night.
Sensitivity to light and glare.
Need for brighter light for reading and other activities.
Seeing “halos” around lights.
Fading or yellowing of colours.
No medication can eliminate existing cataracts, and no eyewear can completely counteract their effects.
Some ophthalmologists are seeking nonsurgical solutions. This is generally a safe, outpatient procedure.but at this time, no other solution has been found.
