Yesterday, Ayra Starr bagged eight nominations at The Headies!
The only artist who got more than her this year is Wizkid, with nine. If she’d gotten in the Female Artist of the Year, which would have been deserved considering the other categories she got in, it’d have been nine.
Now that’s some unreal stuff for a new artist who only has one EP and one album out. This might turn out to be an even bigger year for Ayra than the year Asa won Next Rated.
But does she really deserve all those nods? Okay, maybe she does deserve to be Next Rated, but it’s worth looking into because she got all the other nominations because of two songs (“Beggie Beggie” ft. CKay and “Bloody Samaritan”).
That’s kinda like how Wizkid got everything with “Essence.” The only difference here is that “Essence” is a mega-hit and “Beggie Beggie” ain’t even on the local charts anymore. So, how did Ayra Starr manage all that?
First of all, I’d like to say, she’s been ahead of the other women and if there’s any category that is just female artists, she definitely deserves to be there if anybody. So, Best Vocal Performance (Female), that’s okay.
But Afrobeats Single of the Year? Okay wait, I can think of ten other songs that could’ve been there over “Bloody Samaritan.” Afrobeats Album of the Year? So, no Joeboy but “19 & Dangerous” makes it? Come on. What are we doing here?
The biggest discrepancy is even how a Next Rated nominee is bagging an Album of the Year nomination in the same window. In the past, the rule used to be that Next Rated is for artists without a full body of work. So, they just decided to change that for Don Jazzy‘s girl this year? Something fishy definitely going down.
Ayra Starr has been amazing and I love her and her music. But I think there are some of these awards that could’ve gone to other people, anyway. Anyway, what do y’all think about this?
Do You Think Ayra Starr Deserves All The Headies Nominations Or It’s Just Don Jazzy’s Influence?
Let’s hear from you.
