Beninese singer-songwriter, Angelique Kidjo has won the Best World Music Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards, beating Nigeria’s Burna Boy and others listed in that category.
Angelique Kidjo beat Nigeria’s Burna Boy and three other nominees to win the Grammys on Sunday at the Staples Center, Los Angeles.
Others nominated in the category of Best World Music alongside Burna Boy are Altin Gun, “Gece”, Bokante & Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley, “What Heat”, Nathalie Joachim with Spektral Quartet, “Fanm D’Ayiti”, and Angelique Kidjo, “Celia”.

Kidjo who sings in more than five languages and whose career has spanned almost four decades, dedicated her award to Afro-pop singer, Burna boy.
In her acceptance speech, Kidjo celebrated a new generation of African artistes.
“This is for Burna Boy… Four years ago on this stage, I was telling you that the new generations of artists coming from Africa gonna take you by storm and the time has come,” Kidjo said.
Burna boy’s nomination for the Grammy, wasn’t so much of a surprise when it came in November 2019, considering his influence worldwide with the African Giant Album.
With his 2020 nomination, Burna Boy joins the likes of Seun Kuti, Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade in getting listed in that category at the Grammy Awards.
Other Nigerian Grammy nominees include, Babatune Olatunji, Wizkid, Timaya and Kah Lo.
