Actor Jussie Smollett, best known for his role in Empire, was reportedly beaten, taunted with homophobic and racial slurs. A police report stated that the actor was attacked with chemical substance and assaulted with a noose-like rope around the neck by two white men in ski masks, who told him, “This is MAGA country.”
“Maga” stands for “Make America Great Again”, which was Donald Trump’s election campaign slogan in 2016.
According to the Chicago Police department, Jussie, 36 was reportedly attacked while walking downtown about 2am on Tuesday.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Smollett reported that two men approached him and began shouting racial and homophobic slurs. According to the police account, they then struck him in the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on him before one wrapped a rope around his neck.
Fox have issued a statement in which they expressed sadness at the attack on the member of the cast of their show.
“We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our EMPIRE family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night. We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice.

The actor is currently recovering at a hospital were he was taken to after the attack.
