The World Population Day is a United Nations’ initiative celebrated on the 11th of July every year. It aims to create awareness about the exploding world population.
The world’s population totals 7.6 billion people and is expected to grow to nearly 10 billion by the middle of this century before levelling off at around 11.2 billion by the end.
Also, an estimated 214 million women in developing countries have an unmet need for modern contraception, with women in the poorest 20 per cent of the population having the least access to sexual and reproductive health services.
For World population day, the theme today is ‘Family planning is a human right’. Family planning is encouraged for every woman to help determine freely their number and spacing of children. Women and girls should be in control of their bodies and also have the freedom to make decisions.
Relationship coach, Sandra Odufaderin in a chat with Titi and Yomi Owope on #WakeUpNigeria discussed the importance of family planning and the different ways to go about it (awareness).
She said that, many women need orientation because some begin to think it is a taboo and could cause one to age quickly.
Family planning can be done in various ways through the use of contraceptives:
- Coil
- Tablets
- Shots
- Patch
- The traditional methods – withdrawal and calculating your cycle
It is advisable to meet up with a medical practitioner (OBGYN) to review options that would most likely work for yourself. When women can plan their fertility, they can plan their future.
Family planning is essential for securing the well-being and autonomy of women, while supporting the health and development of communities. It is important that family planning is widely available and easily accessible to help slow unsustainable population growth.
The National Population Commissioner (NPC), Lagos state, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin joined on the show to share her thoughts on family planning and provide major information for women.

Family planning enables people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. Family planning represents an opportunity for women to pursue additional education and participate in public life, including paid employment in non-family organizations.
